REST ASSURED THIS WILL NOT GATHER MUCH MORE MOSS UNLESS IT'S ON THE TUNDRA WITH REINDEER AROUND. AND I SUPPOSE, JUST SUPPOSE, THAT HERE IS YET ANOTHER PIECE OF SCANDANAVIAN SCULPTURE. NO, NOT DANISH MODERN, BUT CERTAINLY SOMETHING LIKE A FINNISH FLING. I LOVE SCANDANAVIA, I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY VOLVO WAITED SO DAMNED LONG TO COME UP WITH A 4 WHEEL DRIVE. MAYBE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, THE "Surfin"Bird" can answer this one. Thanks, Bird, keep shooting these masterpieces..............

A KIND OF ESSAY ON YOUR GROUP ICON It was, specifically, those oval windows with the subtle neon signs featuring a martini glass and a bubble or two (think they were portraying champagne rather than a martini, but booze was booze when one is 12) that served as a curious invitation for me to enter as soon as possible. I tried getting into one of those bars in Rock Island, Illinois when I was about 14, but they told me to wait until I could grow real whiskers and wash off the charcoal fake five o' clock shadow and go play babeball.) Not one to accept defeat, I washed off the charcoal and put on sunglasses and went across the street where I was served a beer and then told to "learn to drink wisely." People were different in the 50s, right? Okay, your idea of the martini glass as a requisite for entering photos should serve as a magnet for some really great shots. You already have one FINE COLLECTION. Congratulations. Now going to search for one of my photos from the past 50 years to find my ticket to enter. Great group. Robert L. Huffstutter

JAPAN 1961

I took this in 1961 with a Petri 35 MM. According to the security present, Hirohito was somewhere on the grounds and it was my wish to catch a snapshot of him studying a flower or some blooming thing. It did not happen and the rest of the afternoon was spent wandering aroung the grounds. Although the security was lax, the guards were not thrilled that I was getting a bit too close to the Emperor's private garden. If only I had brought along a zoom lens, I would have captured some better photos. Someone with me pointed at a window and said, "there's his wife." I was too late to catch a glimpse of the Emperor's wife. Please check out my blog, BLOGABOUTJAPAN, for more vintage photos.

TELL ME YOU DIDN'T REALLY TAKE MY PICTURE!

A FAIRY TALE ABOUT MODELING AND THE HANDSOME PRINCE...
She was one attractive young lady. She was the type one does afford a second glance. She was seemingly alone. And it seemed to me that wherever I went on the ground of the Presidential Library, she was sure to follow. I had my Olympus OM77 with the long and large 300x lens hooked up. I found a spot on a bench and started snapping photos of the fountain. Sure enough, within minutes, she was right in the line of my focus and demonstrating a full set of poses, nothing provocative, but poses that sent the message: I want to be a model. "YES, I REALLY DID TAKE YOUR PICTURE," I replied. She smiled. "I thought you would," she said. "Is that okay?" I asked. "sure," she replied. And the conversation began. She told me she was waiting for a photographer who was more than an hour late. He hasn't called. I expressed my sympathy and told her I would be considerate enough to snap a few shots. Thus, the guy never showed up and we did an impromteau model shoot and several more. In due time, we created the kind of portfolio she wanted. I received a letter from her postmarked New York in 1990. She told me how pleased she had been with the photos we took in 1988 and had finally contracted with a successful young designer from Italy. I would like to add that in 1992 she wrote me a letter with an enclosed family portrait type photo of herself being embraced by a tall and handsome man with a huge castle and two smiling babes in arms. Unfortunately, that letter never arrived and I never heard from her again.

ALL OF US BOYS WANTED TO BE PIRATES...

Back in the 50s, before the truth about pirates was revealed in actual fact, a boy's dreams about becoming a pirate had demonstrated a few positive character traits. There was the adventurer spirit, the quest for self-improvement through riches. There was lust for finding new and different lands. Aside from the brutality, the life of a pirate had some positive aspects. Today, the life of the pirate will end in sorrow, in prison, or over the edge of the plank. Away, ye lads, away, away, ye stink of blood and guts. In the meantime, if anyone knows where a toy gun a comment.

This is, without the shadow of a doubt, one of the most intriquing photos I have ever seen. There are those who might wonder why I am so really fond of this image. To satisfy the curiosity of those searching for the beauty I see, get your notepad ready. Composition is well-balanced; there is a lead-in stream (yellow line) that leads one to the left and alternatively to the right, meeting in a common space, the point of interest, the alleyway where mystery lurks. There is a curiosity, too, that overpowers the basic beauty of the image and causes the viewer's eyes to search for more, or to put it another way, read between the lines. Summarily, after viewing pleasing lines, textures, bricks, asphalt, a curbing partitioned with a gutter, posts, a bungled corner that suggests collision with an auto, blue doors, one green door, odd angles, etc, I must say I would like to make it the subject of a watercolor. And I would be honored if you would permit me to add this to my online journal of Art Photographs. Thanks for your comments on my work. You are too kind. My regards, Rob
