Excellent composition. Ingenius contrast. Depiction of the temporal and the ages. Distance between bloom and base of stone symbolic of the unknown. An image that is an experience of a spiritual nature or simply another one of our designed images to pass the time and entertain our visual senses; it is what it is to each individual, much akin to a lifetime. Should I take it for granted and assume it will be here tommorrow for another glance? Should I bother to think about it in a more profound manner or look at it once more and go on to life's next photograph, seeking always the perfect picture that will make me feel that life and death makes sense? WHEN I SAW THIS PHOTO BY newmexico51, one of Flickr's outstanding and impressive photographers, it reminded me of how lonely the life of a creative individual can be when their obsession with creativity is such that we sometimes isolate ourselves without knowing why? But of course, it is our compulsion to be creative. A great photograph, one that will evoke different emotions by those who view it with some curiosity. Thanks to NEWMEXICO51 for permission to exhibit this work. Editor

ONE VERY PRECIOUS PHOTOGRAPH. IF ONE THINKS OF ALL THAT TRANSPIRED BETWEEN THE MOMENT THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN AND 11 SEPTEMBER 2001, IT SHOULD REMIND US THAT WE LOST SOME PRECIOUS PEOPLE ON THAT FATEFUL DAY. IT SHOULD REMIND US TO REMAIN VIGILANT AT ALL TIMES...

A ZEN MOMENT WITH FROG AND LEAF

"If you think Americans are willing to wait a year before getting a prescription for an aspirin, think again. If you want a healthcare based on affirmitive action, go for Obama's healthcare plan. If you want a healthcare plan that will council your grandmother instead of taking out her gall bladder, think again. You have heard the Canadian horror stories, right? We don't need it and we don't want it. Just leave it alone, people are getting the care they need at the Emergency room. Whay about medicare? They have been taking it out of your checks haven't they? Go figure, what is going on anyway

SANTA MONICA MERRY-GO-ROUND 1960S

AN ESSAY ABOUT THE SANTA MONICA MERRY-GO-ROUND

ONE OF MY BEST PHOTOS. SHOT IN THE SUMMER OF 1959 WITH A BROWNIE HAWKEYE. TO BE HONEST, I CANNOT ACTUALLY VERIFY WITH ALL AUTHENTICITY THAT THE CAMERA WAS A HAWKEYE; IT WAS NOT, I ASSURE YOU, AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA OR ONE FAVORED BY THE PROFESSIONALS. NOR DID I PAY A WHOLE LOT OF ATTENTION TO MY FRAMING OF THIS IMAGE. NOW, FIFTY YEARS LATER, I AM AMAZED AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH.

TO SAY THAT I AM ELATED WOULD BE A LIE. ACTUALLY, THE IMAGE CREATES SOME DESPONDENCY CAUSED BY REGRETS. HOW I REGRET THAT I DID NOT TAKE MORE PHOTOS OF THE VENICE AND SANTA MONICA AREA THAT FIRST SUMMER OF MY YOUTH, MY FIRST SUMMER AWAY FROM HOME ON AN EXTENDED VISIT.

OKAY, MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY ASSUMED THAT I WOULD MENTION THE FACT THAT FIFTY YEARS HAS PASSED WOULD BE MY CAUSE OF DEPRESSION. OKAY, I WILL NOW ADD THAT FIFTY YEARS IS A LONG TIME. CAN I RETURN TO MY YOUTH? CAN ANYONE RETURN TO ONE'S YOUTH?

ONLY THROUGH IMAGES OF THIS NATURE CAN WE TAKE THAT IMPOSSIBLE TRIP BACK INTO TIME. THIS IS THE FAMOUS MERRY-GO-ROUND ON THE SANTA MONICA PIER IN SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA. AT THE TIME, IT WAS A MELLOW YELLOW COLOR WITH RED TRIM; AT THAT TIME, VENICE BEACH WAS NICK-NAMED "VENICE WEST" AND WAS THE HUB FOR WEST COAST BEATNIKS WHO ESCAPED GREENWICH VILLAGE WINTERS TO LOITER IN THE SUNSHINE AND READ POETRY AND DRINK ESPRESSO AT SUCH ESTABLISHMENTS AS THE VENICE WEST CAFE.

THE SOUND OF THE MERRY-GO-ROUND'S CALIOPE MUSIC AS THE ELEGANT HORSES WENT ROUND AND ROUND SOUNDED BETTER THAN THE POETRY READ IN THE LIGHT OF FLICKERING CANDLES OF THE CAFE. THROUGH THE YEARS, THIS LANDMARK HAS BEEN THE SOURCE FOR MUCH INSPIRATION, BUT IF YOU ARE STILL READING THIS, YOU MOST SURELY REALIZE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SUCH A PLACE AS A MERRY-GO-ROUND ON THE WEST COAST FIFTY YEARS AGO

The man on the twenty dollar bill, 1844

HE RESEMBLES BERNY MADOFF..........

The man on the twenty dollar bill, 1844
Daguerreotype of Andrew Jackson.

From the Library of Congress.

Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was the seventh President of the United States (1829–1837). He was military governor of Florida (1821), commander of the American forces at the Battle of New Orleans (1815), and eponym of the era of Jacksonian democracy. A polarizing figure who dominated American politics in the 1820s and 1830s, his political ambition combined with widening political participation, shaping the modern Democratic Party. His legacy is now seen as mixed, as a protector of popular democracy and individual liberty, checkered by his support for Indian removal and slavery. Renowned for his toughness, he was nicknamed “Old Hickory”. As he based his career in developing Tennessee, Jackson was the first president primarily associated with the American frontier. His portrait appears on the U.S. twenty-dollar bill. (Wikipedia)

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NYC 1960

UPON JOINING THE GROUPThe BEST of Black & White Photography - Post only your BEST I HAD TO ADMIT THAT I HAVE SOME REGRETS..................

It is a real pleasure to post only my best. One problem exists, and that is my fault. I regret that i did not carry some kind of camera around with me from the time i was ten, 1952. When i think of the opportunities i missed, i can become despondent. On the other hand, when i imagine how many cameras i would have most likely lost, i can face reality. Has there ever been anyone who has carred a camera with them everywhere they went since they were a youngster? Hopefully, there will be much time left for some new best ones...........Rob
